I found commentator Andrew Hill on Haggai 2:1-9 to be helpful. The promised ‘latter glory’ of the temple finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ:
“The true glory of the Second Temple that Haggai calls the people to build will not be the gold and silver of the nations (v. 8). Rather, the stunning glory of God’s temple will be God himself and his presence in the sanctuary and among his people (v. 4). The destination of biblical history is the residence of God with his people, a day when God and the Lamb are the temple of the new Jerusalem (Rev 21:3, 22). An outcome of God’s redemptive activity is peace (v. 9). This peace or shalom of God calls to mind Ezekiel’s promise of a future covenant of peace with creation and creature (Ezek 34:25). This promise of peace foreshadows the ministry of Jesus the Messiah, who offered a supernatural peace to his disciples (John 14:27; 16:33).” -Andrew Hill (‘Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi’ p 83)
